A Quick Note From Post Adoption

Below is a selection of podcasts that cover a range of topics from parenting in general, to parenting different ages, as well as educational podcasts on mental health and sensory disorders.

These are podcasts that the many people within the fostering and adoptive community (both families and workers) listen to and have found insight from them. That being said, these podcasts are not meant to diagnose your children. They may provide information for you to speak with a provider about, but adding undiagnosed labels to others is usually more harmful than helpful.

Also, this list is not exhaustive. If there is a podcast not on this list that you would like to possibly have posted on this page, please email mbarr@centerstx.org and include the podcast title and a short review. If approved, it will be added to the list.

For Parents of Children Ages up to 13

The Baffling Behavior Show with Robyn Gobbel

“The Baffling Behavior Show” is about helping parents, educators, and other professionals understand and respond to children’s challenging behaviors from a neuroscience perspective.

The show’s key themes are:
Behavior as Communication: The core premise is that all behaviors make sense in the moment they emerge and are not inherently “bad,” but rather adaptive responses to a child’s environment or internal state.
Focus on the Nervous System: Instead of using traditional behavior modification strategies, the podcast advocates for addressing the root causes of behavior, which are often related to a child’s vulnerable nervous system, dysregulation, disconnection, or a lack of felt safety.
Parenting After Trauma: specifically supports those parenting children who have experienced complex trauma, toxic stress, or have neuroimmune disorders.
Relational Approach: emphasizing using regulation, connection, and “felt safety” to help children shift from a “protection mode” to a “connection mode”.

For Parents of Teens

 Parenting Today’s Teen

Hosted by Mark Gregston’s, founder of Hearlight Ministries in East Texas, “Parenting Today’s Teens” is rooted in biblical insights and practical wisdom, emphasizing strong relationships with teens over control.
Key perspectives include:
Relationship over Rules: The primary focus is on building a strong relationship with teens, as they change through connection, not strict control. Parents are encouraged to be a trusted source of wisdom and share personal imperfections to build trust.
Unconditional Love and Grace: The approach highlights the importance of modeling God’s unconditional love. Teens need to know that love is not performance-based and that their parents’ love won’t diminish when they make mistakes.
Modeling Integrity: Actions are seen as more effective than words. Parents are encouraged to model the behavior and values they want their teens to adopt, ensuring their actions align with their words.
Guidance and Boundaries: While encouraging independence and ownership of their faith, the perspective also advocates for setting age-appropriate boundaries and consistent, pre-established consequences.
Understanding Teen Culture: The material acknowledges that today’s teens are overwhelmed by information, social media, and cultural pressures. The goal is to help them navigate this complex world by providing perspective and discernment

As four moms, all with autistic children, our mission is to talk freely about these challenges, opening up the conversation to help other parents as they navigate their own journey.  We are by no means experts in medicine, neuroscience, or special education. We are simply moms who are reluctant experts in raising our children the best we can, figuring it out as we go. Mom’s Talk Autism

The fierce love that keeps you going anyway.
